The "Robot Operating System" (ROS) has taken the mainstream of robotics research, and has eclipsed all possible alternatives.

This talk gives a handful of concrete examples where the choices that ROS has made result in bad practices, and constrain robotics component and system developers in very unfortunate ways.

Corresponding best practices from other ICT-based domains are presented as alternatives, often together with a rich choice in open source software projects that support those best practices.
